About Waikiki
Waikiki Beach is one of the most visited beaches in the world with over 8 million visitors each year! If Waikiki beach was in a popularity contest it would have a good shot of winning most popular beach in the world.
So what is Waikiki?
Waikiki is a specific area of Honolulu that is essentially the hub of hotels, restaurants, and entertainment for tourists visiting the island of Oahu. If you like constant action Waikiki is going to be your best bet. You can veg out at the beach all day, when the sun sets catch a show or grab dinner and stay out until bar close, which in Waikiki is 4am.
How Big is Waikiki
The Waikiki area runs about 2 miles along Waikiki Beach and goes back about a half mile inland until it’s abruptly stopped by the Ala Wai canal. On the south side of the canal is Waikiki and it’s high rises and on the other is residential that consists mostly of low rise and houses. It’s flanked on the east by Kapiolani park and right behind that is Diamond head which shadows Waikiki Beach and is one of the most recognizeable features of not only Oahu, but all of Hawaii.
Waikiki is it’s own world compared to the rest of the island because there’s always so much going on. If you like people watching this could be heaven for you. With a wide mix of Japanese, American, and European tourists along with locals abound Waikiki is an international melting pot.
Once you leave the Waikiki area by heading towards the North Shore or the Windward side of the island you’ll see that things slow down a bit and you’ll gain an appreciation for the slower pace of life while getting to view a more natural and uncommercialized Oahu.
I’m a big fan of the Waikiki area because it’s pretty hard to get bored there. There’s always live entertainment, great food, the beach, a ton of outdoor activities, and new faces everyday. Although I’ve heard a mix of opinions Waikiki has a lot to offer when you come visit.
