Hanauma Bay is one of the most popular tourist destinations on Oahu. Imagine an inactive volcanic crater that was eventually flooded by the sea and is now full of marine life just waiting for your to discover. It’s a sheltered bay that lured thousands and thousands of tourists each year to snorkel and scuba because of it’s teaming with life and is shallow enough for you to explore safely.
If you’re looking for surfing and bodyboarding you’re not going to find it here. Hanauma Bay is a conservancy so it’s only good for lounging on the beach and taking advantage of great snorkeling.
TIP – show up early as Hanauma Bay gets really busy right away. The park opens early so you’ll need to be up at the crack of dawn to beat the crowds. Unfortunately the first bus arrives a little before 9 so the way to beat the crowds is generally through taking your own transportation.
Hanauma Bay is closed on Tuesdays! It may also be closed around 8-12 days after a full moon because that’s when the jellyfish often invade!
When you arrive don’t be surprised if you see a line as it’s busy starting first thing in the morning. If you’re also taking on of the first bus rides there (route There’s a huge hill to walk down and a small cart (image a golf cart on steroids) that drives up and down the hill for about a dollar each trip.
