Unless you’re an amazing swimmer or taking a cruise, you’re going to hop onto one of the many Oahu flights. Anyone coming to Hawaii is going to come in through the Oahu airport which is Honolulu International Airport (HNL). It’s the only major commercial airport on the island of Oahu. There are also military airports, but for civilians like myself, these won’t be an option.
Finding flights to Oahu is relatively simple. Nowadays you can simply hop online and compare the best rates for your departure date. It took me a few days to do a bit of research and pick my dates, but once I did I simply ordered online and was ready to go.
Airlines that offer Oahu Flights
The airlines below offer direct flights to Oahu from the mainland U.S.
- America West – US Airways
- American Airlines
- Continental Airlines
- Delta
- Hawaiian Airlines
- NorthWest
- United Airlines
**TIP – Don’t go directly to the airline websites to search for your flights. This will take you a ton of extra time and you won’t be able to compare flights. The only way it would make sense is if you are using miles to book your flight.
My favorite fare engine is expedia.com which is what I used to book my flight path to Hawaii. The reason why I use this engine is because it offers a comparison flights with rates from the carriers offering flights to Oahu on your chosen date(s).
Flights To Other Islands From Oahu
Island hopping is incredibly common and relatively cheap. If you feel like jumping over to Maui or the Big Island expect to spend $50 on the low end up to $120 on the high end for a trip.
Finding Cheap Flights to Oahu
What’s cheap for flights to Oahu? That’s relative because it depends when you’re coming. During the slow season you can get your flights significantly cheaper than the high season.
The busy seasons for Oahu flights are typically around holidays such as Christmas, Thanksgiving, and during spring break. Flights are obviously directly affected with gas prices so they may fluctuate if the oil market is rising. If you must visit Oahu during the busy seasons make sure you plan out as far as possible. Begin searching for your flights today on Expedia so you have a good idea of their costs.
Like anything if you plan ahead you’ll be better prepared, so start looking at estimated flight costs today to understand about how much you’ll pay. Check maybe once a week or month and purchase a flight if it’s significantly lower than what you’ve seen when researching.
These are rough estimates, but in the slow season expect to pay anywhere from $400-$600 for a round-trip flight and in the high season you can pay up to $1,300 round trip. Of course it depends if you’re okay flying coach or want first class!
Oahu Flights as a Package Deal
If you do the math you’ll probably start to see that package deals are in fact a bit cheaper than booking everything seperately. These packages usually include your car rental, hotel, and flight. Again, I highly recommend comparing these on Expedia.com to find the best possible deal.
After You’ve Booked Your Flight
After you’ve chosen your Oahu flight you’ll want to start preparing by making sure you have a full packing list for Hawii and that you understand how you’ll get to Waikiki from the airport when you arrive.
