Waikiki Wildlife

When you’re visiting Waikiki and Oahu you’ll notice several common animals along your journey. There are a ton of species on the island, but these stick out a ton since you’ll see them everywhere. Including your hotel or apartment.

Even if you close all your windows and doors they’ll still find a way in, trust me, so it’s best to learn to overcome your phobias of the Waikiki wildlife before even coming to the island.

Pigeons

I was completely surprised when I got here and there were no seagulls, but rather a ton of pigeons everywhere. They’re use to tourists so you won’t scare them at all. When riding my bike or waking around Waikiki I get within a foot or two of them before they finally decide to move. From what I hear they’re not as aggressive as the pigeons in New York or some other big cities, but there sure are a lot them, especially near tourists with food!

Geckos

These little guys are fast! I always wanted a lizard growing up, but now that I live here they’re just too common to want one as a pet. They’re usually pretty jumpy and afraid of you so they’re not a threat at all. In my first apartment here I had them on my walls in the evenings. If you hear a tiny chirping sound at night that would be these guys. Unfortunately they’re not big enough to kill the large cockroaches…

Cockroaches

Also known as B-52s these guys can fly and they’re all over the place. You’re going to have to get used to them if you decide to move here because they’re everywhere. There are several ways to minimize how many are in your place such as keeping your doors and windows closed, keeping your living space and kitchen spotless of anything they might be interested in, and setting out sticky traps, but you’ll still get some.

Red Crested Cardinals

The prettiest of the Waikiki Wildlife page here, the Red Crested Cardinals are fairly common in Waikiki and the surrounding area.

So those are four of the most common animals in Waikiki. You won’t find snakes or many spiders at all in Waikiki, but pigeons, geckos, and cockroaches rule Waikiki.
